It’s the first day of the new year – don’t spend it alone & in agony. Best tips to help alleviate your hangover & how to turn it into a party!
Do you enjoy yourself a little too much on New Year’s eve? Struggling with a headace, nausea and aches? Take solace in knowing that there are so many others that feel the same way they made January 1st National Hangover Day.
The first thing you need is water.
Dehydration from alcohol & alcohol withdrawal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea are the main cause of the headaches, dizziness and body aches. The best remedy is to have a glass of water as soon as you awaken and to keep sipping water throughout the day.
There are those who swear by effervescent soluble tablets as a hangover remedy (such as Alka Seltzer.) It contains aspirirn which helps with headache and body aches and antacids for heartburn, upset stomach and acid indigestion (nausea). You may want to try one in your first glass of water.
Now replenish your electrolytes.
Alcohol – and vomiting or diarrhea that’s accompanied it – has dehydrated your body, losing potassium, electrolytes and sodium that cause headaches, dizziness and body aches.
Gatorade is scientifically proven to help replace lost fluids, eletrolytes and carbs.
Coconut water is a healthy alternative.
Then, time for breakfast.
Who wants to use a blender to make a “healthy” smoothie for a hangover? All that noise when your head’s killing you!
And who wants to slave over a stove or bend over an oven when they’re nauseated, dizzy and achy? Here’s the perfect hangover breakfast with all the nutrients you need for a pick-me-up minus the hard work when you’re not up to it. (Start with toast, juice & banana and work your way up to bacon and eggs.)
The Perfect Hangover Breakfast
- complex carbs like toast, croissants, and oatmeal help with nausea and are also slow-releasing carbs so they aid in regulating blood sugar levels
- fruit juices both rehydrate and give your blood sugar an instant boost to aleviate the shakes and dizziness
- bananas are the #1 recommended fruit for hangovers due to potassium and blood sugar elevation to aleviate headaches
- fried eggs and bacon are high in protein and fats, both of which help slow the metabolism of alcohol, giving your body a fighting chance
- caffeine in coffee can perk you up, but it can also dehydrate – limit to one
Didn’t work? Time for a Bloody Mary.
Scientists say the age-old “hair of the dog that bit you” hangover cure isn’t recommended because it can cause further dehydration. They also seem to be concerned that this “cure” can be connected to alcoholism.
But – there are many people that swear it works better than anything else they’ve tried. If you only use this remedy on National Hangover Day – once a year – then there should be no problem.
January 1 is also National Bloody Mary Day which is awesome because it is recommended as the best “hair of the dog” hangover cure.
