The series of fantasy novels on Harry Potter by a British children’s author Rowling, J. K., attained international fame when she portrayed an imaginative character of a schoolboy Harry Potter. The series begins when 11-year-old orphan Harry discovers that he is the son of wizards. The story centers on his adventures as a student at the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The series covers seven novels, following Harry through seven years at Hogwarts. The character ages one year in each book. The first novel in the series was published in the United Kingdom in 1997 as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, in the US as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The other six novels are Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (1998), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (1999), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2000), Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix (2003), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2005), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2007).

The Author
Joanne Kathleen Rowling was born on July 31, 1965, in Chipping Sodbury, northeast of Bristol, England. She studied French at Exeter University, and taught English in Portugal for several years. Rowling said that she conceived the idea for the characters while sitting on a train in London in 1990. She completed the first novel while she was yet an unemployed teacher in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Harry Potter series is unique in publishing because of its widespread popularity among both adults and young people. In addition, both boys and girls enjoy the series, which is unusual in literature for children.

In the motion-picture versions, Daniel Radcliffe plays Harry, Emma Watson plays Hermione, and Rupert Grint plays Ron. The adventures of Harry, Hermione, and Ron include encounters with a magical flying car, ghosts, giants, huge spiders, magic spells, and hostile classmates and teachers. All the stories mix suspense with humor and vivid descriptions.
