Here is an exercise to help you find your core values apart from everyone’s expectations. Discover yourself, know who you are when you’re at your very best, and find your guiding purpose in life.

What do you represent?

If you were a product, what would a TV commercial say about you – not what you do, but who you are? We are all unique. One-of-a-kind.

This exercise takes you beyond the usual list of who you are in your family, work, and community to a collection of values & characteristics that reflect who you are as a person that flows into each of those areas.

Although everyone uses the same core values list for this exercise, the collection of choices when they’re done is unique to them alone, like a snowflake.

“Your values become your destiny.”

Core Values Exercise

(This exercise is much easier if you print the list.)

Do one step at a time without reading ahead to get a true picture.

  1. First, go through the list of core values and whenever a word strikes a chord, circle it. This is an exercise to find what’s most important to you. It’s not what you should be. There is no right or wrong. You are finding your true self apart from the expectations of those around you. Circle it when you feel a good gut reaction to the word and it conjures images of connection.
  2. Next, take a closer look at your choices. There’s a lot of circles on the page, but there’s a pattern in all those choices. Re-write the list, grouping words with similar meanings together.
  3. Then give each group a name that holds meaning for you. It could be the one value in the list that causes the most reaction, or a label that embodies the list as a whole. What term inspires you to be that collection of qualities? Wholesome, Hallmark Girl, Bond Girl, Cheerleader, Frugal, Posh, etc.
  4. Now, choose the top 10 most important groupings on your list. (Less is fine.) Eliminate terms and groups that aren’t very important, that aren’t a focus for you. Is there one or two groupings that are the most important? They go to the top of the list.
  5. Write down experiences you’ve had that reflects each group.
  6. Are there any that you haven’t had experiences for? Think of ways you can incorporate those into your life.
  7. Are there ways that you’d like to live your values that you haven’t yet? Write those ideas down too.

The final Core Values List is a snapshot of who you want to be at your best & the life you want to live.

Step 2: Learn how to use the list to set goals.
