Strawberry Oatmeal Smoothie Makes You Full Longer

Oatmeal has been a breakfast staple since time eternal. It’s a comfort food that leaves you feeling full & satisfied. Level up your morning with this Strawberry Oatmeal Smoothie recipe – it’s heartier, with a sweet taste.

Adding rolled oats to your smoothie changes the texture, taste, nutrition – and your fullness. It’s thicker, and can be smooth or chunky depending on how you prepare it. Which do you prefer?

Why add oats to your smoothie?

Adding rolled oats to your morning smoothie has several benefits:

  1. Half a cup of oats adds 2 grams of heart-healthy fiber to your diet that aids with digestion.
  2. Oatmeal is gluten-free.
  3. Oats thicken your smoothie so you can leave out the yogurt – a bonus for a calorie-conscious breakfast.
  4. The oats make you feel full longer, a great benefit for weight-loss.

Is it okay to put raw oats in a smoothie?

Raw oats are safe to use in a smoothie, and a great way to add fiber and nutrition. We recommend using rolled or instant oats because they are already pre-cooked.

Whole oats that require cooking can be used, but the texture won’t be as smooth. You will be aware of the oats as you drink your smoothie (but you may prefer this.) When using whole oats, it is best to cook them (they will be mushy) or soak them first because this will also make them easier to digest. Some people have complained of cramping.

How do I soak whole oats for use in a smoothie?

Adding oats to your smoothie makes a smoother, thicker consistency but may require some prep time. If you are using steel-cut oats or whole oats (that need to be cooked versus rolled or instant oats that are pre-cooked), soak them in the milk or liquid in your smoothie recipe for 30 minutes. Then pour all the milk & oats into your blender with other ingredients and make your smoothie.

Just six blended ingredients are all you need to make this Strawberry Oatmeal Smoothie, a creamy solution that makes for a nutritious, refreshing and filling breakfast before heading out the door.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats

  • 1 banana

  • 14 frozen strawberries

  • 1 cup soy milk (or favorite milk)

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar (optional)

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract or almond extract

Directions

  • If you have a high-power blender, grind oats first for a smoother smoothie.
  • Add banana, strawberries, soy milk, sugar and vanilla extract and blend until smooth.
  • Pour into glass or to-go container and serve.

Notes

  • For a chunky, gritter texture: don’t grind the oats first. Add them last with a quick blend so they will keep their shape. Top with granola bites.
  • For a sweeter taste: use a frozen banana. (Then you can omit the sugar.)
